Western Circuit Training - Chronic pain - clarity amid complexity
PIBA is pleased to invite you to a seminar kindly given by Jon Valentine, Consultant in Pain Medicine and expert witness.
Chronic pain is often seen as medically opaque and legally contentious. This session will outline the role of the brain and nervous system, explain how ICD-11 has reframed chronic pain, and show why the traditional narrow focus on CRPS is now less central. We will consider vulnerability and psychosocial factors, consistency and honesty, and how these influence real cases. The talk will also highlight the overlap between chronic primary pain and conditions such as somatic symptom disorder, bodily distress disorder and functional neurological (dissociative) disorder, and what this means for causation, condition, treatment, and prognosis. The aim is to give barristers a sharper framework for evaluating pain evidence, instructing experts and testing opinions in cross-examination.
The event will be followed by refreshments.
